Preparing For Your Photo Session
What to wear for my photoshoot.
For women, here are my 5 recommendations.
Most of us have a professional life. It’s good to have a recent and flattering headshot that can be used on LinkedIn as well as in publications that may feature you and what you do. For most professions, you can’t go wrong with a dark jacket and white button-up, collared Oxford, or blouse. If you are a physician, maybe you’d like to have a flattering photo of you with your white coat. For my creatives, this might be something unique or handmade that shows off your funkiness. If you are retired, you might want to wear something really fun from the studio wardrobe with fur and sequins!
We all have a fun, casual side. Think Saturday brunch. Jeans and a solid color sweater or t-shirt work well for this. Many women are self-conscious about their arms. If you are, opt for long sleeves. Don’t forget the accessories, such as earrings or a cool bracelet. Believe it or not, these both should be form-fitting, and fit well, even if you are carrying extra weight. This makes it easier for me to smooth out any lumps and bumps in Photoshop later.
The little black dress is a must. It’s simple, classic, and elegant. It’s great for date night and it can be dressed up or dressed down. Remember your classic accessories for this.
This is a great opportunity to wear that gorgeous holiday party dress that is collecting dust in the back of your closet. You know you want to wear it! And have a great photo of yourself in it.
This can be a wild card. Cute summer dress? That hot pink blouse you love? Or, try something from the studio wardrobe that might be a little out of your comfort zone, like a tulle skirt or a black moto jacket. Perhaps you have an interesting hobby, such as horseback riding. Bring your riding boots and helmet! This can be anything you want, so have fun with it!
Extra tips, 2 weeks before your session
Clothes: Try on EVERYTHING that you plan to bring and make sure that it fits. Don’t forget about underwear for each outfit. Maybe you need a strapless bra for that off-the-shoulder blouse or some Spanx for that little black dress. Pressed clothes are pretty clothes, so visit the cleaner a week or so before your session.
Shoes are not important unless you want them to be. Most images will show you from mid-thigh and up, however, if you have a great pair of shoes that make you feel fancy and amazing, bring them!
Hair: If you color your hair, get your roots touched up.
Treat yourself to a neutral-colored Mani/Pedi before your shoot.
Allow the viewer of your image to imagine themselves there with you. If this session is for dating profile pictures, at least one of your photos should be taken outside. Remember that it is important to give an interested person a good overview of who you are as a complete person.
My goal is to design a photo session specifically for you, with your goals in mind. I will help you communicate visually who you are on the inside. A picture is worth a thousand words!
